The 32 Best Chocolate Advent Calendars For Christmas 2021

2020 was a write-off, but 2021 has seen glimmers of normality return. With that, the lockdown blues from Christmas 2020 are behind us, and we're now keener than ever to enjoy this year's festivities without a hitch. Big (but safe) family gatherings are back on the cards, and I suspect many Britons will splurge this year to compensate for last year's disruption.

Last year, the advent calendar market boomed, with many start-up chocolatiers producing their own countdowns to Christmas. Many of these sold out in a heartbeat too, helping to support artisans and fledgling businesses through tough economic times. This year, I suspect we'll see something similar again. The big brands will likely focus on the themes of togetherness, indulgence and family, while small businesses will focus on creating exquisite flavour combinations and more stock to cope with the predicted explosive demand for delicious, handmade, local chocolates.

As I did for Christmas 2020 and Christmas 2019, I've scoured the web looking for my favourite chocolate advent calendars for 2021. This year, as well as my favourites from big brands, I've used my local chocolate shop finder to find small businesses with big ideas. This list is sorted by price, from most expensive to the cheapest.

Top Tip: Last year, many of these advent calendars - especially those by artisan chocolatiers and craft chocolate makers - sold out rapidly. If you are interested in any of these, I urge you to place an order as soon as you can to avoid disappointment. Also bear in mind that delivery fees may apply.

1 Fortnum & Mason Feasting Advent Calendar

This Fortnum & Mason advent calendar is ideal for the food-obsessed chocoholic. Across 25 days of December, you'll unbox foodie treats from the luxury grocer's product range. There's plenty of chocolate, of course, but also a range of boozy tipples and condiments too.

The chocolate items inside this Fortnum & Mason Feasting Advent Calendar include chocolate mice, chocolate coins, a Christmas-spiced biscuit-filled chocolate bar, Marc de Champagne chocolate truffles, salted caramel hot chocolate, Merrilossus chocolate biscuits, as well as spiced orange and dark chocolate biscuits. Other highlights (for me) include Piccadilly Piccalilli, Dungeness Wood Sage Honey, and Caramelised Nuts.

It's all presented in a delightful board box, filled with 25 drawers containing the products. What's more, you can squirrel the calendar box away after you've worked your way through the treats, and refill it with your favourite goodies next year.

Whittard's Hot Chocolate Advent Calendar for Two returns for another year! The hit from last year returns in a regal blue box, decorated with yellows, blues and gold-foiled printed stars. Open the doors to each side and you'll reveal a selection of dark blue, green, and light blue drawers, each filled with two sachets of hot chocolate powder.

The calendar might be called "for two", but that doesn't mean you have to share. Perhaps that's a cup of hot chocolate for breakfast and for bedtime, or perhaps that's one for today and one to save as a pick-me-up during the inevitable January blues. Or, if you have a significant other - and you are kind spirited - then perhaps you'll take the opportunity to enjoy a mug of hot chocolate together.

5 Pierre Marcolini Advent Calendar 2021

Last year, I had the joy of counting down to Christmas sampling Pierre Marcolini's creations each day through December. The entire experience, from packaging through to tasting, just felt magical, and that's what I seek from an advent calendar. Fun, whimsy, and a healthy dose of festive nostalgia.

The Pierre Marcolini Advent Calendar 2021 is another show stopper, with a colour scheme of oranges and blues depicting a snowy scene in Piedmont. Inside, 24 chocolate creates are hidden beneath big round doors, including a selection of gianduja bells, hearts, Pierre’s famous ‘Pralinés Anciens’, and other iconic chocolates. The chunky advent calendar opens like a book, revealing a snow capped house illustration. 24 doors hide 25 surprises (it looks like there's a double treat on 24th December).

The calendar includes three varieties of treat - the classic Ferrero Rocher, Raffaello and Rondnoir. The first one needs no introduction and comprises of a whole Hazelnut in a milk chocolate and nut croquante. Raffaello features a crisp coconut shell with a smooth coconut filling and a whole almond. Rondnoir is the dark chocolate option.

The Coronavirus pandemic has undoubtedly tested us all in many ways, but one of the most noticeable discoveries along our collective journey is how many Brits truly cherish the invaluable services of the National Health Service. I quite like the built-in ribbon that's tucked away, that you pull out and use to hang your calendar should you so wish to do so.

Inside, there's a selection of cute Santa, penguin and snowman figurines cast in milk, dark and white chocolate. Milk chocolate shells hide a milk chocolate ganache, while the white chocolate shells mask a hazelnut praline, and the dark chocolate shell encapsulates a vanilla and white chocolate ganache. There's also chocolate neopolitans in sold dark chocolate and smooth milk chocolate with almonds.

While some of Godiva's chocolates are now made in Turkey, the chocolates in this calendar are made in Belgium, according to the box.

25 Hotel Chocolat 45% Nutmilk Chocolate Advent Calendar

In recent years, I've pined over Hotel Chocolat's Grand Advent Calendar and its quirky Advent Calendar for Two. This year, there's nine different assortments to choose between, and my pick is the vegan Hotel Chocolat 45% Nutmilk Chocolate Advent Calendar.

It's made in the same factory as dairy chocolate, so Hotel Chocolat can't guarantee it to be dairy-free, but the recipe itself doesn't contain dairy. Instead, Hotel Chocolat turns to hazelnut flour to add a creamy feel to the taste.

Hotel Chocolat reckons their 45% Nutmilk recipe will fool you into thinking its a traditional milk chocolate recipe. You'll have 24 tastes of their vegan chocolate recipe through December, with a mix of cute festive shapes and slabs helping you count down to Christmas.
