I love trying new bean-to-bar chocolates. I love coffee. So, when Frankly Delicious announced a new Coffee White Chocolate bar following their successful Kickstarter campaign, how could I resist buying it?

Coffee and chocolate is one of those Marmite combinations - you either love it or you hate it. When it comes to coffee in chocolate, very few people sit on the fence.

I was curious to try a bean-to-bar maker's take on a coffee chocolate bar. A few days later, my purchase of the 60% Coffee White Chocolate bar arrived alongside the Raspberry White Chocolate and Oat Milk Chocolate bars I also bundled into my virtual basket.

Packaging

The cardboard carton looks sleek and minimalist, with a black and teal colour scheme. There's not much in the way of text on the front of the box except for the product name, Frankly Delicious logo, and the statements that this is single-origin bean-to-bar chocolate.

On the reverse, there's a brief paragraph explaining this is a white chocolate bar with freshly ground coffee added into the mix. There's no hint of the effort Frank goes to in making this bar, and that feels like a missed opportunity.

There's a brief introduction to the Frankly Delicious ethos, and a statement explaining Frankly Delicious contributes to the Global Goals movement.

I particularly like the simple chain diagram to demonstrate the supply of cocoa from the framer, to the co-operative, to the wholesaler, and then to Frankly Delicious. Those not in the know (such as those who receive this bar as a gift) might be unaware of the complex chain that exists for large-scale makers, so a contrast might work well here (if there's enough room!).

As you might expect, the ingredients list is minimal.

Frankly Delicious Coffee White Chocolate ingredients:
Organic cocoa butter, whole milk powder, British sugar, ground coffee.

This bar is produced in a kitchen that handles nuts and milk. There's no nutritional information on the box nor on the website. The 60g chocolate bar is made in the UK.

Product Review

Frankly Delicious used a geometric chocolate mould to form the tan coloured white chocolate bar. Air pocket dimples detract from an otherwise mirror-like glossy exterior.

Make no mistake, this one is for die-hard coffee chocolate lovers. The aroma reminds me of a freshly-brewed Café Latte, full of comforting creaminess and depth of flavour.

A lovely snap provides the soundtrack as you portion up this bar. The geometric mould allows you to break the bar into lots of little pieces, so it's a great bar to dip into now and again as a quick pick-me-up.

The flavour of roasted coffee beans comes through immediately on tasting it, with a healthy dose of creaminess and sweetness from the quick-melting chocolate. It's a rich and smooth flavour that will please any coffee chocolate lovers. It's also completely smooth in texture.

There's no hint of bitterness from the roasted coffee beans as the white chocolate cancels it out. Nor is it too sweet as you might expect from a white chocolate. Neither is it too creamy, which may have been the case had this bar been made with a milk chocolate base instead.

The aftertaste mimics that of a Café Latte too. The coffee flavour lingers for a while before subtly fading out.

This bar is a very fine example of coffee chocolate done right. Clean, fresh and bold flavours pair perfectly with a white chocolate base that strikes the right balance in terms of creaminess and sweetness.

If there's a flaw, it's that this bar is very easy to polish off, so you'll need to be disciplined to make it last longer than one or two sittings.

A delightful coffee white chocolate bar with a flavour resembling a freshly-brewed Café Latte. Creamy yet robust, this is a smooth chocolate bar with a strong coffee flavour at the forefront that's also not too sweet.
