Lidl had me at 'caramelised biscuit chocolate'. They sealed the deal by putting this bar on offer after Christmas at a price I couldn't refuse.

I'm a sucker for anything that features Lotus biscuits, caramelised biscuits, or spiced biscuits (speculoos/speculaas), but when you combine these heavenly bites with chocolate, magic happens.

It feels particularly captivating around the colder winter months, with the satisfying aroma of gently spiced caramelised biscuits enhancing pretty much anything it comes into contact with. Salted caramel was the big flavour a few years ago, and it was added to pretty much anything to boost sales. Try moving for products blended with caramelised biscuit today. Thankfully, this is one trend I can get on board with.

So, how does Lidl's version of caramelised biscuit chocolate taste?

Packaging

The 100g chocolate bar is clad in a film wrapper, so we're sadly not yet at the stage of fully recyclable packaging for mass produced bars. That said, it is nicely decorated in a wintery theme, with a beige forest silhouette siting upon a white background.

The Fin Carré logo sits at the top, with the product name in a scroll-type font beneath it. A Fairtrade logo sits to the side of the graphics of white chocolate bar segments and a stack of windmill biscuits.

On the reverse, you'll find the ingredients and nutritional information in English, Swedish, Dutch, Belgian, and Portuguese.

Lidl Fin Carré White Chocolate Spiced Biscuit & Almond Bar ingredients:
Sugar, cocoa butter, spiced biscuit pieces (15%) (sugar, wheat flour, salted butter (butter, salt), invert sugar syrup, raising agent (sodium carbonates), spices), whole milk powder, almonds (8%), cream powder, whey powder, lactose, emulsifier (sunflower lecithins), natural flavouring. Milk solids: 23% minimum.

Be warned, this bar is sweet. It contains 48.4% sugars - which also happens to be the primary ingredient in this recipe. It's produced in a factory that handles other nuts, besides almonds, peanuts and soya.

There's also a line that explains the Fairtrade cocoa may be mixed with non-certified cocoa on a mass balance basis.

To sum up this bar, I'd say it is Christmas condensed into a chocolate bar. Peeling back the film wrapper releases a quintessential festive aroma of spiced biscuits and gingerbread. This warming fragrance invites you to take a bite.

The bar itself takes on a classic chocolate bar form, with impressions of 24 segments, each imprinted with the Fin Carré logo. The custard yellow-toned bar is liberally speckled with flecks of biscuit crumbs.

This heavy-handed attitude to the biscuit crumbs also extends to the chopped almonds, and between the pair, there is a very good helping of both in every bite.

As this is a sugar-laden white chocolate there isn't much of a snap. It is more of a soft crumble than a crisp snap, but that was expected.

The lead aroma of spiced biscuit and gingerbread is backed up by a sweet, creamy vanilla fragrance. While I'm not the world's biggest white chocolate fan in the world, this bar beckoned me in, with its festive calls, and I found myself compelled to gnaw my way through it all.

It's a well balanced flavour, too. The cinnamon and ginger spices pay very well against the creamy white chocolate base. Yes, it is undeniably sweet, but it straddles that fine line between enjoyable and over the top.

A generous filling, don't you agree?

I like the crunch of the biscuit and almond pieces, contrasting the smooth, creamy white chocolate. The warming Christmas spices and vanilla notes linger long into the aftertaste, while the sugar rush you get from this bar encourages you to take another bite. And another!

If you love Christmas flavours, such as speculoos and gingerbread, and you have a sweet tooth, this bar is for you. I found it very moreish and I couldn't stop myself dipping in and eating a segment every time I walk past the wrapper.

Sweet but satisfying. It tastes like Christmas distilled into a white chocolate bar. It combines the warming flavours of specaloos and gingerbread with a sweet vanilla white chocolate, creating a mouthful of festive joy.

Where to Buy Online

Good luck finding this chocolate bar online. Good luck finding this in store to be honest! It was like gold dust. I first spotted it in my local Lidl store in December at full price, then discounted in February. I stumbled across it somewhere else in the country (possibly the midlands) in June at half price.

I hope it comes back again for this Christmas. While very sweet, it ticks the flavour boxes for me. It's very addictive and I didn't buy enough bars last time!

Lidl also sold a fashionable Salted Caramel Crisp bar too in the same Fin Carré festive range, just to be sure to tick off another unstoppable foodie trend. I didn't feel drawn to that one, though.
