There's little more exciting than unboxing a chocolate hamper. Perhaps there's a psychological throwback to unwrapping presents as a child, but that same enthusiasm is still present in my much older self whenever a hamper is involved.

Today's hamper was a gift from a friend, and arrived in a more-muted Cadbury-branded brown cardboard box than last time, but it still hinted towards the contents inside.

Inside the shipping box was a lidded pale brown wicker hamper. The sturdy reusable hamper has black and silver -toned belt buckles and a carry handle on one side.

A wicker basket gives no clues to what's inside

There's no Cadbury branding on it, so it's ideal to reuse or regift, depending on your preferences. The dimensions are approximate 37cm x 29cm x 19cm, so it's a good size to reuse as a picnic hamper, or as some much-needed storage for sentimental items or paperwork. More appropriately, a secret stash of chocolate, perhaps?

Unbuckle the fasteners and lift the lid to discover the treats within. Thin silver chains on either side prevent the hamper from opening too far.

Cadbury Classic Chocolate Basket Gift Hamper Contents
A good variety of milk chocolate products inside

Weighted towards milk chocolate, this hamper contains a good selection of the core Cadbury range. The Cadbury Heroes, Cadbury Milk Tray, and Cadbury Roses boxes offer variety, with mini flavoured bites of chocolate.

The flavours in the Milk Tray collection seem to have improved in recent times, with stronger and clearer flavours more prominent. The Raspberry & Creme one is good but a shame there's just one of them in the box. The Honey Crunch one (two included) is not a million miles away from a Crunchie in flavour.

The bars of Cadbury Dairy Milk and Cadbury Bournville (and arguably the bag of Cadbury Dairy Milk Buttons) offer a classic tasting experience, without the risk of including flavours that the recipient might not like. Yes, it lacks excitement (especially as the wider range includes flavours such as Fruit & Nut, Caramel, Oreo, Wholenut, Crunchie Bits, Mint, and Daim), but the benefit of this more general approach is wider appeal. If someone loves Cadbury Dairy Milk Fruit & Nut, they'll likely enjoy the regular Cadbury Dairy Milk as well.

The drum of original Cadbury Hot Chocolate powder is a good addition, especially for winter months.

In terms of value, I found the individual products (including a cheaper-but-larger 290g carton of Roses) at my local supermarkets for a total cost of £17.35 (standard pricing, so no promotional offers). The cheapest I could source a 14" wicker hamper and shredded paper was for around £25 (including delivery), so a DIY chocolate hamper with the same contents would cost me more than this hamper.

This one is ideal as a budget-friendly gift for friends and family, young and old. It's equally as good as a birthday present as it is a Christmas present.

RRP: £35.00 | Cadbury | Shop now°

A good variety of core Cadbury chocolate products with a heavy leaning towards milk chocolate items. It was well presented in a reusable lidded wicker basket, and packs in a good quantity of Cadbury products, but isn't as diverse in terms of flavours as it could be. That said, this is a chocolate hamper that will definitely appeal to Cadbury chocolate lovers young and old.
