Back in 2004, Hotel Chocolat opened a shop in North London. Founded by entrepreneurs Angus Thirlwell and Peter Harris, the company sought to add excitement to the world of chocolate.

Fast forward to today and Hotel Chocolat, which is based in Royston, Hertfordshire, has shops right across the country as well as in Denmark, the USA, and Japan. It also owns a cacao plantation on the Caribbean island of St Lucia, and runs an actual chocolate hotel there too!

Besides experimenting with chocolate, Hotel Chocolat also sells its own hot chocolate making gadget, the Velvetiser. The company produces cocoa-inspired alcohol and runs a chocolate subscription club.

In November 2023, co-founders Angus Thirlwell and Peter Harris each netted £144m after agreeing to sell the British business to US confectionery giant Mars.
